Dereck Mpofu, 37 – better known as MrGreen Ambassador is an Afrofusion songster and environmental activist making a big splash in the Zimbabwean music industry for almost a decade with hit singles such as; “ChisikanaChangu Zimbabwe” and “Ko Isu” among others. Honed in Mutare but currently residing in Harare, Zimbabwe, Mpofu is a dedicated artist who started his musical journey back at the age of six. Gifted and diligent, the prodigy has harnessed his talent since 2004. While he attended school, Mpofu had the chance to share a moment on stage with artist Ivy Kombo and Bishop Kasi who both acknowledged him for his talent.
A patriotic artist and acclaimed philanthropist, Dereck Mpofu has achieved six studio albums to date. His earliest project dropped in 2008 and was titled “Handisirini”. This was followed by another world-class project titled “Dr Philosophy” released in 2012 and featured the life-changing single “ChisikanaChangu Zimbabwe”. Produced together with producer Mono Mukundu, this album marked the morning of Mpofu’s musical prowess. Within the same year, he was appointed Goodwill Ambassador Environment, Water Conservation and Zero littering (City of Harare). This influenced many other achievements in the next years, including; Artist of the Year, in 2013 (Monolio Studios) and the Action Award for Outstanding Fundraiser(African Arts Council) in 2014. Within 2014, he also released his third studio album – a production about the environment titled “Mr Green Ambassador Sir”. Dereck Mpofu’s musical ingenuity has persisted since then and resulted in three other albums; “Diplomatic Alliances (2016),” “Godobori (2017)” and “50-50 (a special album on Gender)”.
Throughout his career, Dereck Mpofu has been known for using creative concepts and media such as music and art to address some of the most pressing issues facing humankind today. A couple of years ago, he banded with Nigerian artist Kunle Ayo,South African stars Winnie Khumalo and Teddy Bears, Botswana’sAmantle, Spiza and Bouncy,NorryMalongafrom the Democratic Republic of Congo, along with original artists AlexioKawara, Esther Mukazika, Ras Caleb and Willis Wataffi on the song against internationalism, we're African — No to Xenophobia. Much of his efforts to push the right message to the youths today have contributed to the many awards he won till today. In 2014, he was awarded the Youths Philanthropy Award – courtesy of the Philanthropic Institute of Zimbabwe.
As Dereck Mpofu continues to grow and develop alongside the music and arts industry, his passion to spark change in the world in which he lives through his craft keeps on increasing. Recognizing this as the goal of all the great musicians before him, he too has made this his own.
When he isn’t in the studio working on some great hits, the Harare crooner is usually travelling the world and building relationships with some of society’s upper class. His brand is progressively growingeach day; locally, regionally, as well as internationally.
